Lieber Frederic,
Der Brief meiner Frau, den ich heute via Manchester erhalten, zeigt den am 23. Juli erfolgten Tod ihrer Mutter an. Dies wird die Rückkehr nach London beschleunigen.
Gleichzeitig ein Brief von Miquel, der hierherzukommen denkt in 8–10 Tagen. In diesem Augenblick sehr ungelegen.
Pieper hat schon seit 2 Wochen seine Stelle verloren. Diesmal ohne seine Schuld. Er hielt die Sache geheim, solang lupus hier war. Die Setzer hatten konspiriert, um einen Kerl hereinzubringen, der zu ihrer friendly society gehört.
Mit Sheffield steht die Sache wie folgt;
Die Kerls hatten in der letzten Nummer schändlich gestrichen. Pieper schrieb darauf an Cycles: „I am directed by Dr. Marx to inform you that he cannot congratulate you upon the emendations etc.1" Dann kam folgender Brief von Ironside2:
„Free Press Office, Sheffield,
July 19, 1856
Dear Doctor,
It could not be satisfactory either to us or to yourself to close your article in the abrupt way which you on the instant proposed. I am sorry that I was so unsuccessful in cutting down last week’s contributions, and should have hesitated in doing so had it not unfortunately happened that there was really no other alternative. As to Mr. Ironside’s note, permit me to say that in another letter since received from him, he expresses regret that you should have construed his scrap as he did not intend it, and intimates a doubt that I have in some way offended you? I see no reason why our professional intercourse may not continue and be pleasant; and I venture to hope to receive the usual packet of copy for next week’s issue. You will be so good as to excuse my tardiness in writing. I have been so busy. Your etc. Cycles.3
Antwort.
„July 22, 1856
Dear Sir, I write again myself to show that I bear not the least ill will against you for which, indeed, there would be no cause. In your letter d. d. July 19, you say: ‚It could not be satisfactory etc.‘ Now as to my own satisfaction please to leave it altogether out of the question. As to Mr. Ironside’s ‚satisfaction‘ I’ll quote you the exact words of his ‚note‘: Having told you, that already the first article had ‚overdosed‘ him, he continues as follows:
,They (Dr. Marx’ articles) are entombing the paper. This must not be. They must be brought to a close forthwith. You must not have more than two more doses – this week and the next. You had better write him atonce to that effect.’ I positively decline making myself guilty of manslaughter by administering another ‚dose‘ to Mr. Isaac Ironside and ‚entombing‘ him in the sheets of his own paper. Yours etc.

Damit war bis jetzt die Korrespondenz am Ende. Aber von Geld auch noch keine Spur. Jones sagt, ich hätte die Kerls wegen des Ganzen verklagen können, at the outset5.
Du begreifst, daß ich auf Kohlen sitze. Ich muß für eine Wohnung sorgen, wenn die family kommt, und weiß weder, wie ich aus der alten heraus noch wie in neue herein, da ich weder means6 in der Hand noch irgendwelche nahen Prospekte habe. Die elektrische Bürste strebt vergeblich, die Haare zu schwärzen, da die atra cura7 sie mehr denn je bleicht. Zitschke ist durchgebrannt und so bin ich wenigstens der Zahlung an ihn bis auf unbestimmte Zukunft überhoben.
Espartero und Pucheta in der spanischen Komödie – schöner hat die Geschichte nie den Heros des liberalen Bürgers und den Heros des „Pöbels“ einander gegenübergestellt.
